Am I Ready for Therapy? 5 Signs It's Time to Reach Out

The idea of starting therapy can be scary for many people. Even finding a therapist can feel daunting. Do you ask around for a recommendation or search online? Do you choose someone near home, near work, or somewhere else? What hours do they work, and can you get time off? How will you feel afterwards, and what can you put in place to look after yourself? All of this comes before you've even attended a first appointment, and it's where some people talk themselves out of it. A gentle reminder: finding a therapist is like finding any support person in your life, whether that's a GP, a mechanic or even a hairdresser. It sometimes takes a couple of tries to find the right fit. So how do you know you're ready?

Here are five signs.

You are willing to change. You don't need to know what change looks like or feel confident about it. Being willing to try something different, even if you're nervous, is enough. Therapy is a process you build with your therapist, not a promise to become a new person overnight.

You know you deserve support. Many people only seek help once things feel unmanageable, as if they need to earn it. You don't need to be at breaking point. Wanting to feel better, understand yourself or ease something that's weighing on you is reason enough.

You are open to feeling your feelings. Therapy can stir things up, and that's part of how it works. You don't need to be comfortable with emotion, just open to slowing down and letting yourself notice what's there, at a pace that feels safe.

Talking to friends and family is no longer enough. The people who love you can offer comfort, but they're also close to your story, and you may worry about burdening them. A therapist brings training, objectivity and a space that is entirely yours, with no need to protect anyone else's feelings.

You feel stuck. Perhaps you're repeating the same patterns, replaying the same thoughts or feeling like you're going through the motions. Feeling stuck is often a sign that something needs attention, and that you're ready to look at it differently.

And a sixth reason: because you want to. That's a great reason on its own.

There is no perfect time to start. Finances, timing and uncertainty can always give you a reason to wait. But if some of these resonate, you may be readier than you think. And if you're still unsure, that's okay too. You can always come back to this when it feels right.

If you're struggling right now, please don't wait until you feel ready. You can call Lifeline on 13 11 14 or Beyond Blue on 1300 224 636 at any time, or speak with your GP. If you or someone else is in immediate danger, call 000.

If you're curious about how creative arts therapy or hypno-psychotherapy might support you, I'd love to hear from you. Please get in touch via the contact page.
